  • Friends for Life 2009 - Caroline & Harry

  • Caroline Rich and HARRY.

As her marriage was deteriorating in 2006, Caroline was left with no alternative but to leave her marital home, as it was not a healthy environment for herself and her beloved dog Harry.

After some time living on the streets, Caroline had little choice but to live in temporary accommodation with Harry. Several times they moved and every time, he would give Caroline strength and reason to carry on.

There were some days that Caroline's depression and physical health was so bad and she had no motivation but Harry would sit right in front of her with his big brown eyes. He helped her in more ways than he will ever know.

Caroline's only hope is that by giving Harry good walks, quality playtime and most importantly a healthy diet, she has deserved his loyalty and friendship which makes them content in the knowledge they have each other forever.

  • Friends for Life 2009 - Charlotte & Takara

  • Charlotte Bennett and TAKARA
Born with a rare condition called Klippel Trenaunay Syndrome (KTS), a disease that affects the entire vascular system, Charlotte has endured severe discomfort and complications throughout her life.

After a couple of extremely bad years and, due to being hospitalised in isolation, Charlotte lost touch with her group of school friends that had now moved onto college and found it difficult to interact with other students due to the time spent alone.

Recognising that her spirit was sinking, her parents bought Takara into her life and Charlotte had finally got the Dalmatian she had dreamed of owning since the age of three.

Takara is her best friend and has given Lottie the confidence to meet people and get out of the house every day. She can recognise when Charlotte feels vulnerable and as a result makes her feel safer.

Takara means Treasure in Japanese, it really suits her.

  • Friends for Life 2009 - Evie & Gem

  • Evie Crooks and GEM.
At seven years of age, Evie is the youngest recipient to date of a hearing dog specially trained to help a deaf child. In 2007 when the pilot project was set up, Evie was lucky enough to be one of 12 children involved in the study.

Gem was placed with Evie in October 2008 and even in a space of a few months, has already made a huge difference to her life. The most exciting event is that Evie is now sleeping in her own room for the first time ever, as she now feels safer with Gem by her side.

The whole family have noticed a dramatic improvement with Evie's general behaviour and she has much more independence and confidence at home and in her school life.

Her mum summed up the difference that Gem has made on their lives. After a walk one day, Evie and Gem lay on the lounge rug together both totally shattered. She listened without Evie knowing as she whispered to Gem how much she loved her. That says it all really, doesn't it?

  • Friends for Life 2009 - Lou & Brock

  • Lou Holmes and BROCK.
Brock is one of 15 specially trained Lowland Search Dogs that specialise in tracking people through specific smells rather than searching only for air scent.

Most of the work Brock does relates to sufferers of
Alzheimers and other such terrible diseases. One particular search was for a lady affected with this whose carer had left her house door unlocked and she wandered out. Brock was able to track her from her house through the streets some hours after she had gone missing. Luckily she was found and brought home safely. Without Brock, the police would have been searching for hours possibly days until someone found her.

He is owned by Lou and she has had him since he was an eight week old puppy.

Brock is not only Lou's friend but also a friend to all those who may be in need of him when their loved ones go missing.

  • Friends for Life 2009 - Neil & Anya

  • PC Neil Sampson and ANYA.

PC Sampson was on duty with Anya in 2008 when he was called to a local disturbance. Anya had only been working for six months before this particular incident but she immediately reacted when PC Sampson was approached by a man welding a knife.

What followed next is still a slight haze to PC Sampson but it soon become clear that he had been stabbed and badly injured, and despite his best efforts, he could not get up from the ground. In total he received seven stab wounds including four to the head.

Unknown to PC Sampson, Anya had also suffered a single stab wound to her chest. Throughout this, Anya continued to do her job in protecting her handler, colleagues and members of the public. What is even more remarkable given her inexperience as a Police Dog is that she kept focused on the suspect and stayed determined to defend her handler despite suffering an injury

Anya earned a lot of respect from officers present at the incident that day; for her loyalty and courage in a violent and brief incident.

  • Friends for Life 2009 - Steve & Farley

  • Steve Gill and FARLEY.
Steve Gill was serving as a soldier in the British Army on his last few weeks of a posting in Northern Ireland. A routine manoeuvre would change his life forever, caught in a bomb blast; Steve was to lose both legs and one eye.

Nearly twenty years later, Steve uses artificial limbs to walk short distances and a wheelchair for travelling further. He came into partnership with Farley in 2006 and now Farley helps him with day to day life, especially picking up dropped items.

Having Farley in Steve's life has been amazing and the assistance he has given puts less wear and tear on Steve's limbs which will help him keep going for longer. It is difficult to explain how tough things can be without Farley's help.

Steve plays and teaches basketball and also helps other soldiers who have been invalided out of the army after suffering similar injuries.

With five children in the Gill household, Farley certainly has earned his stripes!
