  • DFS Crufts 2010 Friends For Life - Karen & Coco

  • Vote for Karen Ruddlesden and COCO - Call 0844 646 02 04*

Addison's disease is a rare disorder in which the adrenal glands do not produce enough steroid hormones. When a sufferer's cortisol levels drop dangerously low they will have an Addisonian Crisis, which is always serious, and can be fatal if not treated quickly.

Karen has this disease as a complication of serious health problems that she has had all her life. However, in the last four years it has become more difficult to control as she has her adrenal glands removed because of tumours.

Karen approached Cancer and Bio-Detection Dogs, who already train Hypo Alert dogs for people with hard-to-control diabetes. She was paired with 15-month-old Coco who is their first Addison's assistance dog.

Coco acts as an early warning system for Karen, letting her know when her cortisol levels are low, even before she starts to feel unwell.

He carries Karen's injection kit with him in his vest and is trained to retrieve it on cue.

  • DFS Crufts 2010 Friends For Life - Dave & Treo

  • Vote for Sergeant Dave Heyhoe and TREO - Call 0844 646 02 02*

Treo is an eight-year-old Labrador who has been an AES (Arms Explosive Dog) since he was two. He is trained to search weapons and explosives his mission is to search in operational theatres such as Afghanistan. Treo had completed operational tasks before, but during March 2008 was deployed to the notorious Helmand Province to search for weapons and munitions concealed by the Taliban.

In mid-August 2008, in Sangin, Treo located a daisy chain improvised explosive device that had been carefully concealed at the side of a path where soldiers were about to pass. Had he not located the device, the passing infantry soldiers would have certainly suffered casualties because the device was booby trapped to go off as they passed.

On 3 and 4 September 2008, Treo once again located an IED, saving 7 Platoon, The Royal Irish Regiment, from guaranteed casualties. Again in lead position, the dog successfully identified the device and saved the lives of soldiers and civilians alike.

He has made an outstanding contribution to the armys efforts in Afghanistan, saving lives and inspiring confidence and morale in the soldiers around him.

On 24 February 2010, in a special ceremony held at the Imperial War Museum, London, Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra presented a Dickin Medal recognised worldwide as the animals Victoria Cross to Treo, a military working dog.

  • DFS Crufts 2010 Friends For Life - Jess & Jody

  • Vote for Jess Thomas and JODY - Call 0844 646 02 05*

A couple of years ago Jess was a patient at Birmingham Children's Hospital. She was seriously ill and the nurses were starting to worry, because she stopped fighting her illness. She was very sad and nothing could get her to smile.

A member of the hospital team contacted Pets As Therapy and asked if it might be possible for a registered PAT dog to visit Jess and see if it would make a difference by bringing some cheer back into her life. It was arranged and Dexter was taken in to meet her. It was the first time the nurses had seen her smile in a long time, and this was the first step on a long road to recovery.

Earlier in 2009, Jess again become very seriously ill with respiratory failure - she very nearly died. What spurred her on was an idea she had to help the charity that had helped her turn her life around. On her recovery, Jess decided she wanted to do something special to hilight the value of PAT dogs to people, so she took part in a tandem skydive in October 2009.

Jess and Jody continue to work together bringing the benefits that Jess received in hospital to many other children.

  • DFS Crufts 2010 Friends For Life - Paula & Bouncer

  • Vote for Paula Cogan and BOUNCER - Call 0844 646 02 01*

Paula was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at nine months old so taking medicine and completing daily treatments became a normal way of life for her.

Her family was offered a six-month-old puppy who was the last one in the litter. Paula believed that he was the last one left for a reason he was waiting for her to arrive and take him home, so they would be able to look after one another.

As Paulas condition grew worse, she was spending two or three weeks in hospital every couple of months. During this time, she missed Bouncer so much it was hard to be away from him for so long! Her mum would bring him to the hospital in the car and she was allowed to spend a few hours with him in the park across the road.

In March 2009 the call came from Great Ormond Street. After having been on the transplant list for five months, Paula was finally going to receive her new lung. She spent 10 weeks in hospital, but for about five of these she was unable to see Bouncer.

She is now slowly beginning to regain her health and has started to teach him agility.

  • DFS Crufts 2010 Friends For Life - Sam & Josie

  • Vote for Sam & Josie - Call 0844 646 02 03*

The Daly Family sat glued to the television on a wet cold day in March 2006 watching Crufts and the Friends for Life competition featuring Daniel George and his assistance dog Yogi. This struck a particular chord as their eldest son, Sam, had just been diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy the same life-limiting condition as Daniel that gradually wastes the muscles of those affected.

An application was submitted in 2008 when Sam was seven years old the earliest that Dogs for the Disabled train assistance dogs for children with physical disabilities.

Finally, in spring 2009, the call came to say that Sam would be matched with Josie, a Labrador who wanted to be everybodys friend. It was great to see Sam looking forward to something again.

At home, Sams family really began to see the changes in his confidence and a renewal of his enjoyment in the outside world.

Josie is now the best friend he ever wanted and the pair are inseparable.
