A couple of years ago Jess was a patient at Birmingham Children's Hospital. She was seriously ill and the nurses were starting to worry, because she stopped fighting her illness. She was very sad and nothing could get her to smile.
A member of the hospital team contacted Pets As Therapy and asked if it might be possible for a registered PAT dog to visit Jess and see if it would make a difference by bringing some cheer back into her life. It was arranged and Dexter was taken in to meet her. It was the first time the nurses had seen her smile in a long time, and this was the first step on a long road to recovery.
Earlier in 2009, Jess again become very seriously ill with respiratory failure - she very nearly died. What spurred her on was an idea she had to help the charity that had helped her turn her life around. On her recovery, Jess decided she wanted to do something special to hilight the value of PAT dogs to people, so she took part in a tandem skydive in October 2009.
Jess and Jody continue to work together bringing the benefits that Jess received in hospital to many other children.
